London 2012

So, the 2012 Summer Olympics are under way!  As I sat watching the opening ceremonies with my children, I realized what an amazing learning experience the games are for them.  I really had to dig deep to remember my history to answer their questions.  Then we get to all the countries walking in and my 7-year old daughter was just so intrigued by the fact that all these people were going to compete.  She was fighting to stay awake to see the United States walk in and even remembered all the talk about the opening ceremonies clothing in the news over the past weeks.

We were up early this morning and turned the competition on right away.  Of course the majority has to be cycling, not very exciting (especially for children).  But go figure, my daughter is watching and trying to figure out how they are taping this coverage.  She figured it out, she wanted to me to watch so she could show me the glimpse of the cars and motorcycles in the mix of bikes.  Then she goes not to tell me that the cars are carrying extra bikes and parts for in case they get a "flat" or crash.

Try to catch some of the games with your kids.  It doesn't really matter how old they are, my daughter remembers watching Michael Phelps swim in the 2008 games with me!  She was only 3 at that time!  Not only do they get to see many different sports, but there is a lot of history and geography to share as well!
