Update on clearing your clogged drain

So, back to the book I told you about in my last post.  We had a slow running drain in our bathtub because apparently my son had shoved part of a paper Dixie cup in there!  Kids!  Anyhow, like I said before we do not like to use chemicals in our water because of our private septic system.  So, of course I turned to my new favorite book, "Extraordinary uses for ordinary things" by Reader's Digest.  There are numerous solutions so we tried one that sounded like it would really clear the drain.  You mix 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of baking soda, and 1/2 cup of white vinegar.  Pour the mixture down the drain.  After 10 minutes, pour 1/2 gallon of boiling water down and then run the hot water until the drain flows freely.  Seemed to really do the job for us and I think it was pretty clogged.  Give it a try next time instead of buying a drain opener.

  1. You did a good job there, Courtney! It’s very satisfying to have household problems solved by DIY. That is, if the issues aren’t so technical and can be fixed on your own, despite a lack of professional plumbing knowledge. If the clog can’t be fixed after two or three attempts, then save yourself the energy and call in the professionals.

  2. Most of the DIY unclogging drainage remedies I have gathered talks about the baking soda-vinegar tandem. I've never tried them so I wonder if they really work. I've always been dependent on the plumbing service, which haven't failed me yet.
